This is not only an adventure romp that has the qualities of larger-than-life films and Dickens, but it also gives a good insight into post-war life in Britain (it is set in 1949). Above all, it is a wonderful book about the love of film and cinemas. Eventually it also shows what good can become of us (with a little help from a few friends).
