Yes, the book spells everything out and is sometimes rather predictable, but it’s still a moving tale of friendship, and it tackles issues of greed and racism, showing how easily a community can be swept off its feet by a few loudmouths. And seeing the events from Asra’s and Ruby’s perspectives in turn helps keep up the suspense.
